Python API Client for Twitter API v2

Overview

šŸ Python Client For Twitter API v2

Twitter APi V2 Twitter APi V2

šŸš€ Why Twitter Stream ?

Twitter-Stream.py a python API client for Twitter API v2 now supports FilteredStream, SampledStream, RecentSearch, TweetLookUp, and UserLookUp. It makes it easier to get started with Twitter's New API. Let's see an example of how twitter-stream.py handles SampledStream. Sampled Stream delivers about 1% of Twitter's publicly available tweets in real-time and paints a picture of general sentiments, recent trends, and global events.

# sampled_stream.py

import json
from twitter_stream import SampledStream

class Stream(SampledStream):
    user_fields = ['name', 'location', 'public_metrics']
    expansions = ['author_id']
    tweet_fields = ['created_at']

stream = Stream()
for tweet in stream.connect():
    print(json.dumps(tweet, indent=4))

Is this all you have to do to start streaming? Yes. Are these all the data points available to you? No. Let's discuss line number 5-7. Twitter's Official Documentation lists an elaborate set of query parameters. You can use these queries to get the data you need. We are subclassing SampledStream and carefully constructing clear and eloquent queries in line 5-7. And you can do this for all the query parameters listed in the SampledStream API Reference.

To get more insights into other API endpoints. Visit the examples folder and our documentations twitivity.dev.

  • JSON Decoding exception occurs when receiving 0 length streamed tweets

    JSON Decoding exception occurs when receiving 0 length streamed tweets

    I've been getting periodic crashes due to exceptions being raised on line 109 of twitter_stream.py

    They happen intermittently and I realized they were occurring when a 0 length tweet would be streamed in.

    I added a check for a non-zero length of response_lines before doing the data = json.loads(response_lines) line to skip those types of responses. This prevents the decode of the invalid response and avoids the crash.

    I have a PR ready but can't push one to the repo.

    Hey Guys, trying to help out and make a contribution, not sure if you want it or not. But can't seem to push to your repo even a new branch. Get a permission denied error. Thoughts?

    Bug fixes for parameters and keep-alive signal

    Hi, I encountered two issues when using your library, namely:

    • Fields incluced in _exclude list of API enpoint would be ignored altogether instead of using names without does as intended.
    • Twitter API can occasionaly send empty line when there are no new tweets to be pulled and this fails on json parsing of recieved lines. Reference: https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs/twitter-api/tweets/filtered-stream/integrate/consuming-streaming-data > Responding to system messages > Keep-alive signals

  • Multiple Changes:

    Multiple Changes:

    setup.py -

    • Incremented minor version to 0.8.10 due to bug fixes. (latest 'release' on github is 0.8.8, otherwise this should be 0.8.5?)

    examples/readme -

    • Updated the documentation for FilteredStream class to reflect change to class.

    twitter_stream.py -

    • Removed .json() on line 185 as get_rules returns the appropriate object already. .json() was causing delete_all_rules to not work correctly and not error.

    • Added _has_params = True to FilteredStream class to allow adding expansions to tweet objects. Documentation in examples now reflects this.

    Add ability to automatically reconnect to the twitter stream.

    Title, according to Twitter's API documentation this is best done by detecting a heartbeat every 20s, I have attempted in my own application using twitter-stream to just reconnect upon receipt of a object with 'errors' as a field instead of 'data'.

    Does this actually work and I am being dense? or is it something not yet implemented for filteredstream yet?

  • stream.delete_all_rules() is broken.

    stream.delete_all_rules() is broken.

    Found the issue to be in this line of delete_all_rules():

        def delete_all_rules(self) -> json:
            """Deletes all your rules automatically"""
            try:
    --->            rules = self.get_rules().json()
                ids = list(map(lambda rule: rule["id"], rules["data"]))
                return self.delete_rule({"delete": {"ids": ids}})
            except Exception as e:
                pass

    No need for .json() as self.get_rules() already returns it as such.

    add doctest

    Use the doctest module to run code examples on docstrings interactively. If you run into issues while cloning or creating pull requests? Github's Projected Branches have something to do with it. Our main branch is protected too, but we have to customize the settings. You can easily clone & make sure to create a new branch, i.e. enhancement/add-doctest submit a PR using that branch!
